The School of Journalism and Mass Communication offers students a selection of 9 specialized majors, all of which lead to a Bachelor of Science Degree. Students may also choose to minor in an area outside of the JMC School.

If you have been admitted to Kent State University you can become a JMC major immediately upon entering KSU. If you are unsure of your area of concentration you enter KSU as as a pre-journalism major and mass communication major.
Current KSU students wishing to change to a JMC major must have a 2.75 overall GPA at Kent State. If your overall KSU GPA is between a 2.00-2.74 you can declare your major as Pre-JMC. If you would like to change or declare your major, you should go to the JMC Advising Office in room 328 Franklin Hall and request the form required for declaring your major. Once approved by JMC, you will get a letter stating that you have been accepted as a major.

In your first semester as a journalism major at Kent State University, you will take an orientation class taught by a JMC instructor. You will also be assigned a professional academic advisor who will be available to help you with scheduling and other curricular matters.
