Nuts For Radio
Some things you may or may not know about Black Squirrel Radio
Unknown to most students at KSU, Black Squirrel Radio, an online radio station, is thriving here at KSU. Students who volunteer run BSR or Black Squirrel Radio on the second floor in Franklin Hall. The station has been around since the late 1920s early 1930s, and has gone through some name changes.
Black Squirrel Radio is popular, though most students don’t listen to it, and has listeners from more than 75 different countries including the United Kingdom, Germany, and Spain. BSR also has a wide variety of music including urban, rock, and local music, and accepts requests. They broadcast at most home games here at KSU and several away games. BSR also has a mobile DJ Service, and any student can become a DJ.

When asked why he joined BSR Demetri Nerris said, “ I wanted to expand my skills in media.” Nerris also said the station allows him to voice his opinion, choose music to play and have fun.
BSR also has talk shows such as “He said she said,” “Girl talk,” and “Tech time.” When asked about some of the talk shows Nerris said, “It’s not boring, it’s more interactive. Our target age is 18-25.”
Students on campus admit they don’t listen to BSR as much as other main stream stations. Ryan Shackellford said, “ I have never listened to it.” Kyle Zigany said,” Next to never,” and Katara West also said, “Never.”
Nerris was asked how he felt about some of the students’ reaction to the questions and he said, “ It hasn’t been advertised correctly. No one has showed them’ ‘hey we play your songs and hey we talk about things you want to talk about.”
Nerris also said he was working hard to get more listeners. “I’m going to network with Wind-up Records, and Live Nation.”
Students who work for the station say they like it. DJ Nerris said ”Yeah bro, it’s awesome.”
And what about that crazy name? The station used to be called WKSR, but there was a legal conflict with another WKSR in Tennessee in 2005. The Black Squirrel part comes from the black squirrels that live in Kent.
