How The Golden Flash Came Along

Seven different mascots have been featured as symbols for Kent State University. The first appeared in the 1920s. The most recent, the eagle, premiered in 1985.

  • 1920: Silver fox: John McGilvery raised them and he was the president of the university
  • 1926: Golden flash: It was chosen in a contest by a student at Kent State
  • 1951: Flasher: A golden retriever was adopted by the team and named as the new mascot
  • 1966: Gorg: It was named after a cartoon character that was popular in the ’60s
  • 1972: Golden flasher: A golden palamino horse and masked rider
  • 1973: Golden Flash: A masked man with lightning bolts in each hand
  • 1985: Live Eagle: It’s been the mascot for 24 years

What does flash mean in golden flash? It’s a big mystery! “When I think of it I thing of lightning fast,” said Mr. Doug West Fault, the leader of the network system engineer at Kent State University.

Do you think the mascot makes an impact on sports teams? Kent State student Raffiel Morgan said, “ I think that the mascot should have changed because he gets everybody hyped at the games but I didn’t know that Kent state had other mascots I thought it was always flash the eagle.”
