Institute offers hands-on experience

Thirty students had a chance to explore different media topics June 10 to 15, 2007 at the JMC Summer Diversity Institute, co-sponsored by Dow Jones Newspaper Fund and Kent State University.

Workshops included hands-on experience by letting the students write articles on topics they pick and letting broadcast students take pictures, produce video and write scripts.

In a matter of a week, all of the JMC students produced a news Web site by working with mentors and instructors.

Instructors included Candace Perkins Bowen, Jan Leach, Karen Kastner, David Smeltzer and Traci Williams.

Students who attend the Institute in June 2004 were considered advanced students this year who were working on broadcast and writing.
