WORKSHOP

Kent State's JMC hosts 12 students for the 2002 workshop

The12 attendees of the 2002 Dow Jones Newspaper Fund Minority Workshop at Kent State University compiled this Web site. The program, directed by Candace Perkins Bowen, ran from July 26 to Aug. 1.

Contrary to the year before, most of the students in attendance had background experience in journalism. Although it took a few days to break the ice, the students illustrated teamwork as they applied their journalism skills into producing this Web site.

The students were introduced to many aspects of journalism including writing, grammar and photography. They also received hands-on experience and coaching from professional journalists and photographers.

The Web site contains a wide range of articles pertaining to the workshop. The students took field trips to places such as "The Plain Dealer," Great Lakes Science Center, Porthouse Theatre and an Akron Aeros baseball game. Afterwards, the students wrote stories dealing with the trips. What you are seeing is their 11 days of hard work. Special thanks to Rami Daud for creating the Web site.

Speakers during the workshop included: Colette Jenkins of the "Akron Beacon Journal" Kent State student Rami Daud, Rick Senften of "The Repository," chairman John Bowen of the JEA Scholastic Press Rights Commission, Kent State University photographer Bob Christy, Mark Russell, Dave Campbell and Traci James of "The Plain Dealer" and various members of the Kent State chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists.

In addition to a generous contribution from the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund, the following organizations sponsored students for this workshop: "Akron Beacon Journal," "The Plain Dealer," "The Repository," "Dayton Daily News," J. Copely Publishing and the Kent State University School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Other contributors include Kent State alumni and friends Rick Senften, Nancy Lee and Candace and John Bowen.

The students were helped along the way with their mentors from various newspapers. Mentors included: Carlin Armstead, Rick Senften and Charita Goshay of "The Repository," Mark Russell, Angela Townsend, Karl Turner and Susan Ruiz Patton of "The Plain Dealer," Yuvonne Bruce, Mary Kay Quinn, Betty Lin-Fisher, Jewell Cardwell and Jemal Brinson of "Akron Beacon Journal."
