Rich Ramhoff wins
Taylor Award at first 'Franklin Homecoming'

Kent JMC welcomed back more than 120 grads and friends for the first Homecoming celebration in beautifully renovated Franklin Hall. A social hour was followed by a brunch and the awards presentation. The William Taylor Award this year went to Rich Ramhoff, '89, vice president of Gannett's Midwest Group and president and publisher of the Lansing, Mich. State Journal. Rachel Dissell and Jon Wile received Friends of JMC Awards. And, Anne Reid, of the College of Arts office, received the JMC Director's Service Award.

Former prof and DKS adviser, Bruce Larrick, dies

JMC lost a friend and former colleague when Bruce Larrick died Nov. 17. Bruce was a faculty member and Kent Stater adviser from 1982-1986 before joining the Philadelphia Inquirer. He was 59.

Scott Juba, a recent master's graduate, has been named the top graduate student in the state by the Ohio Communication Association.

JMC student wins ONPA
Photographer of Year

Visual journalism major, David Foster, has been named Student Photographer of the Year by the Ohio News Photographers Association. Greg Ruffing, a JMC graduate now freelancing, placed third in the professional competition for News Photographer of the Year. For a complete list of winners, including a number of other JMC students and alums, click here. Foster also recently placed 12th in the Photojournalism Competition II of the Hearst contest with his news and sports photos.

JMC students continue to win top honors in the SPJ Region 4 Mark of Excellence Awards. And, word of more winners is coming in every day.

Here are the most recent winners: Deanna Stevens, Online Sports Reporting; Julie Bercik and Justin Kiek, TV In-Depth Reporting; Nick Stroud and Jim Everetts, TV Feature Stories; Katie Morse, TV General News Reporting.

2006

Homecoming big success

Kent JMC welcomed back dozens of alums and friends for Homecoming 2006 in the Schwebel Garden Room of the Student Center. A social hour was followed by a brunch and the awards presentation. The William Taylor Award this year went to Brooke Spectorsky, '69, President and General Manager of WKYC-TV in Cleveland. Others honored were the Canton Repository's Rick Senften, '76; Radio City Rubber Group's Ed Esposito, and JMC's retired professor, Bob West, '50. Click here for photos.

JMC students win Emmy

Three Kent JMC students won an Emmy from the Cleveland chapter of NATAS for Best Student Program. Brain Handler, Joseph Seaman and Ned Bockrath won the award for their documentary entitled "Dragged Under." It was produced in Karl Idsvoog's Documentary class.

Senior wins 1st place in SPJ

Kara Pospichel, senior broadcast news major, has won a Mark of Excellence award in the national SPJ television breaking news category. Pospichel won the top spot for her story on "Battalion 325." Broadcast news majors Erin Moore and Amanda Seese were national finalists in the television in-depth reporting category for their package on "H1B Visas."

5 Knight winners from Kent JMC

Five of the six John S. Knight scholarships went to Kent JMC students again this year. Winners were Meranda Watling, Beth Rankin, Tara Pringle, Stephanie Park and Jennifer Farquhar.

The Kent JMC chapter of PRSSA won a number of major awards at the University Student Leadership and Honors Award Celebration. They included: Organization Excellence Award; Prof. Michele Ewing, Adviser Excellence Award; Carli Cichocki, Community Excellence Award; and Elaine Laps, both the Student Leader of the Year Award and the Nancy and John Scott Leadership Award. This follows on the heels of the organization winning a national Teahan award for an Outstanding PRSA/PRSSA Chapter Relationship. The honor recognized the strong partnership with the Akron PRSA chapter. The organization received a plaque and $300.

Burr wins 3 major awards:
The Burr has won three major awards in the 2004 AEJMC Magazine contest. The Spring 2004 issue, edited by Steven Harbaugh, won first place in two categories: Single Issues of Ongoing Print Magazine: Editorial and Single Issues of Ongoing Print Magazine: General Excellence. The CyBurr took second place in the Online Magazine competition. Jamie Carracher was editor and Meranda Watling webmaster. Prof. Ann Schierhorn is adviser to the publications.

Gannett Foundation renews Producing class grant:
The Gannett Foundation has provided another $18,000 in grant money to continue its support of the Advanced News Producing class. The course, in partnership with Gannett-owned Cleveland station, WKYC, provides advanced instruction in television news producing, with strong emphasis on professional presentations by Channel 3 staffers under the direction of Executive Producer Rita Adelson.

6 JMC faculty win teaching honors:
Kent JMC prides itself on providing quality classroom education. This semester, six full- and part-time faculty have been honored by their students. They received Graduate's Applause awards after being named by graduating seniors as faculty who made a difference in their academic careers. Awards went to Candace Bowen, Kim Colebrooke, Michele Ewing, Gary Hanson, William Sledzik and Davis Young.

Fall NewsOhio staff chosen
Here is the staff for the fall semester NewsOhio, our scholastic public affairs program. Natalie Pasquarella will be the anchor; Brooke Whitney will be the field reporter; Kara Pospichel will be the video conference reporter; and Mariah Zickafoose will handle The Buzz. Returning talent will be Jonathan Harvat, Tony Hardman, John Paul and Joe Harrington.

'77 graduate gets journalism award:
Jeannine Guttman, editor and vice president of the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram has won the Judith W. Brown Spirit of Journalism Award.
The award is given annually to an outstanding woman in journalism. It is named for Judy Brown, longtime publisher and editor of the New Britain (Conn.) Herald and NESNE's first female president.
Jeannine, a 1977 graduate of JMC and a former Stater editor, heads a news staff of 110. The paper is the largest in Maine, and the Telegram is the only statewide paper.

Al Fitzpatrick wins award from AJHA:
JMC graduate and Adjunct Professor, Al Fitzpatrick, has received the Local Journalists Award given by the American Journalism Historians' Association for outstanding career contributions to journalism. The presentation was made at a special luncheon of the AJHA, meeting in Cleveland for its annual national convention. Fitzpatrick had a long, productive career with Knight-Ridder and the Akron Beacon Journal. He teaches a course in Managing Diversity at Kent State.

Fidler joins U of Missouri

Roger Fidler, former professor of JMC and head of the Institute for CyberInformation, has left the faculty to work with the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri.

Students win Knight awards

Kent JMC students won five of the six John S. Knight Scholarships presented by the Akron Press Club. Winners included Erin Galletta, Kathryn Hilbert, Shannon Peluso and Tara Pringle. Elizabeth Baldwin won the Ludel Sauvageot Scholarship. They received their $3,000 scholarships at a luncheon in late spring.
